Intent 
 
At Appletree Gardens the teaching of Religious Education:
 
  • Develops pupils knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Lets pupils explore their sense of identity and belonging having a voice within their own community.
  • Addresses the issues of right, wrong and personal responsibility reinforcing our golden thread of feeling happy and safe. 
  • Offers opportunities to stay healthy through personal reflection and spiritual development. There are many links between the RE and PSHE curriculum where children are encouraged to take time to reflect and show  understanding towards the views and beliefs of others. 
  • Allows pupils to explore and appreciate the diverse community in which we live
  • Encourages pupils to learn from different world views, values and traditions whilst preparing them for later life. In RE we continue to develop life long skills that will allow children to reach their potential. 
  • RE provides opportunities to visit different place of worship and learn about different faiths. 
  • Develops critical thinking skills by exploring and discussing religious beliefs enabling children to voice their thoughts and opinions in a nurturing and safe environment. 
  • Enables pupils to become thoughtful citizens both within their own community and the wider world. 
 
Implementation 
 
At Appletree Gardens First School we broadly follow North Tyneside's 'Agreed syllabus for Religious education' 
 
The elements of knowledge and understanding, critical thinking and personal reflection run throughout the agreed syllabus. 
 
In our Programme of Study we have adapted the Agreed Syllabus to ensure that it is bespoke and tailored to our school community.
 
Throughout the year we learn about and celebrate a range of religious occasions such as Christmas, Eid, Easter, Diwali and Chinese New Year. 
 
We have a weekly values assembly which has a theme linked to our personal well being.
 
We have links with St. Peter's church in Monkseaton and the Whitley Bay Islamic Cultural Centre and try to visit other places of worship in our area.
 
We use a range of practical resources, visitors, videos and artefacts to enhance learning in Religious Education.

Year 1

“I like learning about Jesus”  

“The Qu'ran is the special book for Muslims”

"At Easter, Jesus got put on the cross and then came back from the dead"

Year 2 

“Jesus died on Good Friday”

“We have learned about Christianity, Buddhism and Judaism”

"Muslims have a big feast during Eid and they fast to support poor people"

 Year 3 

"Hinduism started in India a long time ago, they believe in one God"

"Advent is the 4 Sundays before Christmas and they light candles in Church"

"I liked the Hindu temple visit and playing on the drums"

Year 4 

“In Islam they have 5 pillars and one of them is Hajj where they have to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca"

"Eid is a special celebration for Muslims where they break the fast"

"Jesus had to carry the cross and died on Good Friday and came back to life on Easter Sunday"
