Grow your learning in Design and Technology
"Design and technology should be the subject where mathematical brainboxes and science whizzkids turn their bright ideas into useful products" James Dyson
At Appletree our design and technology curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the creative, technical and practical skills needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
Our curriculum ethos has been specifically designed for our learning community and it supports us to plan and teach and evaluate our success.
Design and Technology at Appletree gives children meaningful ways to express ideas, make choices and respond to the world around them through practical learning. As part of the DT cycle children can evaluate their finished product by reflecting on their work and sharing ideas of how it could be improved.
I Reach My Potential
Our aim is for all pupils to have the confidence, choice and meaningful opportunities to think and make a variety of products. We encourage children to reach their full potential by providing open-ended challenges and encouraging creativity.
I Have Opportunities
The curriculum provides children with the opportunity to problem solve and develop their own creative ideas as individuals and as part of a team. We aim to provide our children with the opportunity to use their imagination to design, use tools safely and make products within a variety of contexts, to provide motivation and meaning to their learning. Children are taught a range of topics and skills including; mechanisms, textiles, food technology, structures, and electrical systems (in Key Stage 2).
I Am Happy and Safe
At Appletree children are engaged in a variety of opportunities where they can take risks, problem solve and succeed in a safe learning environment. Children are able to use tools and equipment safely through clear rules and modelling prior to practical work.
I Am Healthy
Our food technology curriculum focuses on helping children understand healthy eating, hygiene and wellbeing through practical hands– on experiences. Children are given opportunities to discover different types of food and cooking techniques both in school and outside in forest school on the fire pit.
