Geography

Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future   Michael Palin
I Have a Voice

In geography we want children to talk about and share their experiences. Every trip the children take, every walk they enjoy, every glance out of the window on a train is an opportunity to learn and explore. From The Early Years upwards children talk about their experiences. They are encouraged to talk about their homes, their local area and we give them the confidence to be proud of their roots. We want children to respect one another and be intrigued by others that have walked different paths to them. Children can compare the world they know, note similarities and differences and we are so lucky to have local features such as St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay Beach on our doorstep and the river Tyne only a short metro ride away. Travel bear has a voice every week when it returns from traveling .

I Reach My Potential

In geography our aim is for all pupils to have the confidence, choice and meaningful opportunities to think and learn about the world. In nursery all children have photographs of their families and homes on display, a daily reminder that they are important and we want them to strive to talk and to share stories and to grow into inquisitive learners that can reach their potential.

I Have Opportunities

Every year group organises school trips and each one is an opportunity for children to explore the local area. Our children walk around local area, use the metro to visit Newcastle and use the coach or longer trips to places such as Alnwick Castle. Our staff are passionate about giving opportunities and thrive to submerse children in their surroundings. We use music, songs, art and outdoor lessons to inspire and give children al the opportunities they need to enjoy the subject of geography.

I Am Happy and Safe

At Appletree Gardens we talk about being safe, keeping yourself safe and others too. During geography lessons we investigate land features along the coast, rivers and transport. All great learning opportunities as well as reminders of how to be safe in and around water. How to cross the road safely etc.

I Am Healthy

In geography we look at other cultures and ways of life and compare them to our own. We look at food and life style choices always reminding children how important it is to look after ourselves. Learning self care and respect for others means our open minded children have a healthy outlook on the world and appreciate things they have that others may not.

We teach geography skills and encourage our children to be inquisitive geographers from the first day they come in. We celebrate their journeys and holidays and we discuss trips and adventures. Every journey is a learning opportunity and from this we share knowledge of the world around us.
