Grow your learning in Art and Design

“Every child is an artist.” – Pablo Picasso

Art and Design at Appletree Gardens First School encourages pupils to explore their creativity, express their ideas, and develop confidence through a range of artistic experiences. Children are inspired to experiment with different materials, techniques, and styles while learning to appreciate and respond to the world around them through art.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Our curriculum ethos has been specifically designed for our learning community and it supports us to plan, teach and evaluate our success.

I Have a Voice

Art and Design at Appletree enables pupils to express their ideas, emotions and individuality creatively through a wide range of artistic experiences. Children are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and interpretations using drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and mixed media, while developing confidence in discussing and evaluating their own work and the work of others.

I Reach My Potential

Our aim is for all pupils to develop creativity, resilience and artistic skills through an engaging and progressive curriculum. Using the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme, children build knowledge and techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and design, while learning about significant artists and artistic styles. Pupils are encouraged to experiment, reflect and refine their work, developing independence and pride in their achievements.

I Have Opportunities

Pupils at Appletree benefit from a broad and balanced Art and Design curriculum that provides opportunities to explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques. Through carefully sequenced lessons from the Kapow scheme, children experience exciting creative projects linked to wider curriculum themes and are given opportunities to showcase and celebrate their artwork within school and the wider community.

I Am Happy and Safe

The Art and Design curriculum promotes a supportive and inclusive environment where all children feel valued and confident to share their creativity. Pupils learn how to use materials and tools safely and responsibly, while developing respect for their own ideas and the creative work of others. Staff encourage experimentation and positive risk-taking, helping children to grow in confidence and self-expression.

I Am Healthy

Art and Design supports children’s emotional wellbeing by providing opportunities for self-expression, mindfulness and creativity. Through engaging in practical and imaginative activities, pupils develop focus, perseverance and a sense of achievement. Collaborative projects and reflective discussions also help to build positive relationships, confidence and emotional resilience.
