What does speaking and listening look like at Appletree?
INTENT
At Appletree Gardens we recognise that speaking and listening allows pupils to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually and socially and to have a voice. The development of pupils' language and vocabulary is an essential factor in improving their academic success, particularly in literacy as it provides the foundation for reading, writing and learning across the wider curriculum.
Our thoughtfully designed curriculum and learning environments promote purposeful talk through the use of engaging resources and quality adult interactions. We encourage children to speak clearly and confidently and to express their views and opinions. Activities such as role play, talk partners, group discussions, articulating sensory experiences in forest school, class debates and school performances support our pupils to grow their learning and reach their potential.
IMPLEMENTATION
Speaking and Listening in Early Years
In early years we have experienced staff who invest in building excellent relationships with all of our families. There is a focus upon high quality interactions between staff and children and talk partners are used in Nursery and Reception to build relationships and early conversation skills. Language is modelled and new words are introduced and children have lots of opportunities hear and say new words through activities that fascinate, challenge and excite them.Communication and language opportunities in Early Years include daily story time, revisiting of core texts and rhymes until they are well known, the introduction of key vocabulary, forest school and outdoor learning opportunities, Talk For Writing, cooking and PSHE Jigsaw activities.
In Early Years children's starting points are assessed through baseline checks and observations along with ongoing assessments throughout the year.
